Word of Mouth!
Recent testimonials from our visitors
Email from France
Hi! SA friends!
I am just a French historian preparing a paper to be read, next July, at PMB campus. Congratulation! You have a very nice and interesting website. It really makes one feel like catching the first aircraft and fly over!
I was last at Saldanha in 2002, when I read a paper at the Military/Navy Academy. I spent there a wonderfull day. I sincerely hope that your country (which, in my heart is also mine) goes better and better again.
Very kind regards.

Letter from London
"I can't express in words how wonderful our stay at Papkuilsfontein was. The only problem was the brevity of our stay, oh how i wished we had booked a whole week..!"

"I had a great time. Did far more than I planned which was no bad thing after such a long journey - it would've been a shame just to sit by the pool for a week! There was possibly too much planned and I'd like to have had more time to do the same amount of stuff, but that was my schedule not yours. The whale trip was the best..."

The Smidswinkel Restaurant and Conference Centre
The Smidswinkel Restaurant and Conference Centre seats 60 people. It is the nerve centre of Van Zijl Guest houses. There are numerous reference books to which you can refer. They cover topics from the tortoises you will find crossing our roads to the birds that coast our skies. We also hand out our own map of the area which will guide you to the sights worth seeing.
The Restaurant is not just a full on information centre. There is a bar, with braai facilities in the garden and a fireplace in the Restaurant where you can warm yourself on a cold winter's evening.
If you give us 24 hours notice we will serve you the traditional dishes of the area, some of which you may have no experience of such as a baked sheeps head, stuffed heart, skilpadjies (liver) and many others. The area around Nieuwoudtville produces some of the finest mutton in the world. Leg of lamb or Leg of Springbok is always on the menu.
During the flower season (July to October) Hendrik Van Zijl gives a talk on most evenings. He will tell you about the flora, the bulbs (about which he is an expert) the weather, the geology, the history of our area and what you can expect to see the following day.

Môreson "Pioniershuis" (Pioneer's home)

Môreson sleeps four people and is fully self-catering. There is a BBQ area, sheltered from the elements.
Môreson is the last thatched "Pioniershuis" (Pioneer's home) in Nieuwoudtville. Originally the roofs of all the houses were thatched. After the Anglo-Boer War in 1902, Oregon timber was imported from America and zinc (galvanised iron) from America and Britain. This resulted in the thatched roofs being tossed off, the "brand solders" (fire-ceilings – a fire-prevention building technique) built of reed and clay replaced with oregon beams and planking, and zinc roofs fitted. Wherever an old house with a pitched roof has a flat-roofed section, we know that this section was added after 1902.
Môreson is situated on a rocky outcrop and the walls were built of sandstone and clay. In the "Voorkamer" (lounge) of the house, a section of the original "brand solder" can be seen. The clay on top of the reeds acted as a shield to protect the house in the event of the roof catching fire.
