Karibu Travel and Tourism Fair is an annual event held in Arusha, Tanzania where East Africa's travel and tourism industry congregates to exhibit their products and services to regional and international travel agents and tour operators. This year, the Fair will be held from June 5 to June 7 at the usual Magereza Grounds near Arusha Airport. During the past nine years, Karibu has expanded, upgraded and diversified to meet the changing demands of the growing tourism industry and become its premier showcase. The Fair is jointly organized by the Tanzania Association of Tour Operators, Tanzania Tourist Board and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism. The Fair was originally named “The Arusha Travel Market” and was first launched in June 2000.
Golden Anniversary of the Discovery of Zinjathropus Boisei
Olduvai Gorge, Ngorongoro Conservation Area
August 17, 2009
This year marks the 50th Anniversary of the discovery of Zinjanthropus. During the anniversary observance, from June to August, there will be exhibitions and workshops on human evolution that will bring to Tanzania researchers, scientists, and other participants from different parts of the world.
Olduvai Gorge is a prehistoric site in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, north of the Crater in the eastern Serengeti Plains, at the edge of the Great Rift Valley. The main gorge is about 48km long and reaches up to 90m deep.
Research and excavations at Olduvai Gorge by Dr. Louis Leakey and his wife Mary began in 1931 but it was not until 1959 that Mary Leakey discovered fragments of teeth and skull of an early man Zinjanthropus boisei, which was later renamed Austalopithecus boisei.
Following this discovery, and through the support of the National Geographic Society since 1960, detailed excavations have been carried out at the site and a wide range of stone tools, fossils of extinct species of animals and more bones of hominids including early Homo sapiens have been excavated. Olduvai is today one of the most important archaeological sites on earth because the geological strata exposed in the Gorge reveal a remarkable record of animal and human evolution from about 2 million to about 15,000 years ago.
