Hi! SA friends!
I am just a French historian preparing a paper to be read, next July, at PMB campus. Congratulation! You have a very nice and interesting website. It really makes one feel like catching the first aircraft and fly over!
I was last at Saldanha in 2002, when I read a paper at the Military/Navy Academy. I spent there a wonderfull day. I sincerely hope that your country (which, in my heart is also mine) goes better and better again.
Very kind regards.

"I had a great time. Did far more than I planned which was no bad thing after such a long journey - it would've been a shame just to sit by the pool for a week! There was possibly too much planned and I'd like to have had more time to do the same amount of stuff, but that was my schedule not yours. The whale trip was the best..."

OVERBERG KONTREI
Dyer Island Cruises Experiences:
Whale Watching; Shark Cage Diving

The names Dyer Island Cruises and Marine Dynamics have become synonymous with and well renowned for quality marine wildlife experiences. Our team of conservationists and resident marine biologist are working constantly with global experts involved in ocean sustainability projects. With our extensive knowledge we can offer an unforgettable whale watching and shark cage diving trip, encompassing all aspects of The Cape's coastal wildlife.

This unique approach introduces the wonders of the ocean and continues to thrill people from all over the world. We enthral our guests from start to finish with insights into the rich and diverse wildlife inhabiting our waters.

Gansbaai is the BIG TWO TOWN and Great White Shark Capital of the world. This is the only place in the world where you can be so fortunate to see a Southern Right Whale as well as a Great White Shark on the same day.

Where Do We Meet?

We meet our clients at the Great White House in Kleinbaai. We provide you with wind and waterproof clothing in case of bad weather conditions, as well as an inflatable life jacket. We do have extensive full liability insurance. We launch from Kleinbaai Harbour.

The Ultimate Marine Big 5 Trip:

  • We do most of our whale watching in Pearly Beach area, where we find the highest concentration of Southern Right Whales. The Southern Right Whale come to our calm bays every year from June to December to either, calve and nurse their young or to mate. We do have a special permit to approach the whales from up to 50 meters. Curios whales will come right to the boat. We spend our limited time with these magnificent creatures and move towards Dyer Island.
  • On our way to Dyer Island we might be so fortunate to see Humpback and Bottlenose Dolphins.
  • At Dyer Island we view the African Penguin (6000 to 8000) and various seabirds (cape cormorants, white breasted cormorants, bank cormorants, crown cormorants, swift terns, kelp gulls, black oystercatcher, giant petrel, cape gannets, etc.).
  • Behind Dyer Island lies Geyser Rock, which is the resident of about 40 0000 Cape fur seals. Between the two islands we found ourselves in the world famous Shark Alley. This is a world-known location for viewing and cage diving with the Great White Sharks.
  • We stop at the shark boats and there is a very good chance of seeing a Great White Shark.
  • After this exhilarating two and a half hour trip we return to Kleinbaai harbour. We do meet in the restaurant at the Great White House for refreshments and to watch the personalized DVD of the trip.

Conservation involvement:
Wilfred Chivell, owner of Dyer Island Cruises and Marine Dynamics, is certainly the most knowledgeable person about the ecosystem and varied wildlife found on and around Dyer Island.

His care and dedication for the health of this sensitive ecosystem have lead to the launch of different conservation projects for the area:

  • 'Faces of Need - Artificial Penguin Nest Project' which aims at creating 2000 artificial nests on Dyer Island by 2008.
  • Over the years his 'Bird Rescue Initiative' have made him the prime transporters of injured and oiled marine birds from the island to shore, where they would be transported to SANCOB.
  • The 'Marine Litter Project' aims to educate the public and local community about the devastating results of pollution on wildlife while also initiating cleanups of the coast.
  • Support the research fieldwork conducted by the White Shark Trust during 2006 in allowing the population information to be gathered from Shark Fever.
  • NOLWANDLE CRAFTS: Our own community project in Masakhane. We trained 22 ladies out of the local community to manufacture bead work, clothing, etc. The British High Commission is a sponsor of this project.
