Before I started my career as a National Guide, I studied at the University KZN in Durban (Bachelor of Economics); I also achieved my post graduate Diploma in Market Research and Advertising at UNISA in 1978. I worked for 15 years at Atlantis Diesel Engines in their Market Communication Department. As a Tour Guide, I gained a lot of knowledge with regard to the Wine Industry in South Africa. On a national level, I have a lot of interest in the wildlife that our country has to offer, especially regarding birds. I like to inform guests in my presence of all things relating to South-Africa, such as local cultures (the vast diversity), socio-economic and political structures etc.

Language Capabilities:
English, Afrikaans
Experience:
Tourist Guide; Field Guide: member of the Cape Club, Tygerberg Bird Club, Bird Life SA, The Botanical Society of SA, Indigenous Bulb Society of SA, and Field Guides Association of SA.
Background:
I was born on a farm in the mountains surrounding the picturesque Tulbagh Valley in the Western Cape. As a young child living on this farm, I became aware of the beauty of nature and especially, the Cape Fynbos, Renosterveld and the few remaining patches of Afro-Montane forests, together with the big variety of birds, butterflies, reptiles and other creatures, large and small, dependent of their own unique eco-systems.
I made a study of the natural History of the Western Cape. As mentioned above, I am member of several organizations. I have been Chairperson for the past 5 years of Tygerberg Bird Club, and this position has lead me to organize and led many "bird"-outings, and most of which always end up in natural history outings as many of my "bird" friends share my passion for nature.
Becoming a qualified Tourist Guide and then later a nature guide, was the best thing that could have happened to me, as nothing makes me more happy than to share my passion for nature and the variety of creatures in our Country with visitors from here, as well as afar.

Annalie van der Merwe
Registration Number:
WC
Language Capabilities:
English, Afrikaans
Experience:
National Guide since September 2007
Background Wine Industry:
2006/7: As Program Manager of local Radio station in Paarl, I presented an educational program on Wine and the many facets of this Industry.
Personal Background:
I was born in the Northern Cape of South-Africa, in a lovely town on the banks of the Orange River: Prieska. The name Prieska originated from the Khoi people that lived in the Kontrei centuries ago. The name Prieska means: "Plek van die verlore bok-ooi" - "Place of the lost goat". Prieska is the only town in South-Africa with a fort built from the semi-prescious stone "Tiger-eye", during the Anglo-Boer War in the late 1890 - 1900's.
Academic Background:
Higher Primary Education Diploma: University of Stellenbosch
Teacher at various schools in and around the Western Cape
Headmaster of various schools in the "Koue-Bokkeveld" and Ceres Valley
Teacher at Reformatory School for Black Boys, Simondium, Western Cape
Teacher of the Paarl Valley: Teaching History, skills development and drama my main contribution
Teacher of the Wellridge Private School, Wellington. Whilst teaching here, I launched a project on the life and times of Nelson Mandela before and after 1994.
Human Skills Co-Ordinator, Drakenstein Prison, Paarl
Executive Committee of Football Club, Mbekweni, Paarl
History, culture and traveling were part of my life, since childhood, and until today, these interests have a huge influence in and on my everyday life.
Through being a Tourist Guide, I do not only enrich my own life, but also who are traveling with me. To expand our horizons is one of the biggest challenges in the world today. Giving of ourselves to other, is the most costly and valuable gift, and nothing is achieved without embracing the desire to make it happen! I like to live the well-known phrase: "Carpe Diem".
