Word of Mouth!
Recent testimonials from our visitors
Email from France
Hi! SA friends!
I am just a French historian preparing a paper to be read, next July, at PMB campus. Congratulation! You have a very nice and interesting website. It really makes one feel like catching the first aircraft and fly over!
I was last at Saldanha in 2002, when I read a paper at the Military/Navy Academy. I spent there a wonderfull day. I sincerely hope that your country (which, in my heart is also mine) goes better and better again.
Very kind regards.

Letter from London
"I can't express in words how wonderful our stay at Papkuilsfontein was. The only problem was the brevity of our stay, oh how i wished we had booked a whole week..!"

"I had a great time. Did far more than I planned which was no bad thing after such a long journey - it would've been a shame just to sit by the pool for a week! There was possibly too much planned and I'd like to have had more time to do the same amount of stuff, but that was my schedule not yours. The whale trip was the best..."

Papkuilsfontein Farm is situated about 25 km from the bulb capital of the world: Nieuwoudtville, bordering the Namakwaland, Hantam Karoo (Western Karoo), Bokkeveld, Boesmanland and the Knersvlakte. About 5-6 hour's drive from Cape Town and about 52 km east of Vanrhynsdorp and the N7. Flowers appear from late March to October, peaking in August and September.

Accommodation on the main farm of Papkuilsfontein:
The two sandstone and thatched cottages, De Hoop and Gert Boom, are fully equipped, with furnishings maintaining its historical charm. The cottages are both privately set in the Fynbos area of the farm, each with an inside hearth, down duvets and hot water bottles for the colder winter nights. Bring your book to read in the hammock under the trees and remember towels for swimming in summer, either in the rock pool just above the waterfall, or in the new farm dam specially built for you between the two cottages.
De Hoop - This historic thatched and sandstone cottage was restored in 1987. It forms part of the original homestead complex, all the other buildings on the old "werf" are now ruins. De Hoop is tastefully furnished and fully equipped for four. The large fireplace will ensure cosy evenings and the outside shower is an absolute delight.
Gert Boom - This cottage, built in 1994, utilizing sandstone, timber and thatch from Papkuilsfontein, nestles against a rocky ridge, adjacent to a popular grove. The cottage was named after an early 'bywoner' one Gert Steenkamp, a tall man affectionately christened Gert Boom* by all and sundry.
("Boom" - Afrikaans meaning Tree)
De Lande - Accommodation on the De Lande Farm, 9km from Papkuilsfontein and 14km from town (between Papkuilsfontein and Nieuwoudtville):
De Lande Guesthouse - Relax in comfort at the De Lande Guesthouse, 9 km from Papkuilsfontein, and on another property, and enjoy access to the other fascinating attractions and activities on the farm Papkuilsfontein (Fynbos walks, the canyon and waterfall, rock art and of course more flowers). De Lande is not in the Fynbos part of our property, but in the Renosterveld transition to Succulent Karoo with the Dolorite sill jutting in on the side. The veld here is short, leaning more to Karoo scenery, and your landscape is the black Dolorite koppies, and Shrub Karoo vegetation.
Jan Voorman's Cottage - This quaint corrugated iron cottage, set against a gentle slope, offers unlimited views of the vast Hantam plains famous for their bright spring colour. Recently renovated it provides simple yet luxurious accommodation while retaining the comfortable 'farmhouse' atmosphere.

Escape to this unique farm, with its breathtaking canyon of 200 meters deep, private waterfall, a large natural rock swimming pool, and San rock art, hiking trails through sandstone rock formations and mountain biking.
Guests love the display of Bulbinella latifolia in front of one of the cottages. Succulents, march lilies, recently identified species of Cliffortia, a fossilized sand bar, snuff-box rock formations, 146 species of birds, including Black eagles and unspoiled fynbos provide interest for visitors throughout the year.
It's one of those truly special places where you've cracked the right combination between warm, beautiful, homely and wild. The quality of peace and stillness defies description...
