Word of Mouth!
Recent testimonials from our visitors
Email from France
Hi! SA friends!
I am just a French historian preparing a paper to be read, next July, at PMB campus. Congratulation! You have a very nice and interesting website. It really makes one feel like catching the first aircraft and fly over!
I was last at Saldanha in 2002, when I read a paper at the Military/Navy Academy. I spent there a wonderfull day. I sincerely hope that your country (which, in my heart is also mine) goes better and better again.
Very kind regards.

Letter from London
"I can't express in words how wonderful our stay at Papkuilsfontein was. The only problem was the brevity of our stay, oh how i wished we had booked a whole week..!"

"I had a great time. Did far more than I planned which was no bad thing after such a long journey - it would've been a shame just to sit by the pool for a week! There was possibly too much planned and I'd like to have had more time to do the same amount of stuff, but that was my schedule not yours. The whale trip was the best..."

Moolmanshof, 1798, is said to be the oldest house still standing in Swellendam at 217 Voortek Street. It is a classic example of a Cape Dutch style farmhouse and is situated on the last remaining hectare of the original farm.
Bo-Kapie, built in 1833, is one of the oldest houses in Swellendam.

At Moolmanshof, situated in a park-like garden, the visitor can relax under the oaks and watch newly hatched owlets peering from their nest or just cool off in the sparkling saltwater pool.

Accommodation consists of 3 double rooms en suite in the Manor House, and self catering accommodation is also offered in the restored old stables on the farm.
Enjoy the privilege of actually sleeping in a National Monument. The manor house has recently been restored and stylishly decorated to offer heritage accommodation with the unpretentious and relaxed atmosphere of a bygone era. It is here where old-world charm meets contemporary comfort.

Bo-Kapie sleeps 4 - 6 persons and is fully equipped for self catering, including bedding. There are 2 bathrooms (one en suite). There is an open hearth and wood is provided.
Moolmanshof and Bo-Kapie is centrally situated for museums, restaurants, shops, golf course, hiking trails, and Marloth Nature Reserve.

The present H-shaped house developed over the years from 1799 to ca 1900. The present owner, Lizette Hendry, has the history of Moolmanshof well documented.

On 25 October 1998, Moolmanshof was 200 years old.
Moolmanshof, like many houses which have been cared for over long periods, is well set off by its grounds, for there has been time to try out and select the landscaping. The garden grows a profuse variety of trees, shrubs and flowers, irrigated by plentiful supplies of "leiwater" through a sophisticated distribution system. The upper part of the property is kept under control by a horse, supplying the manure.
The most imposing tree is perhaps the Turkey Oak rumoured to be as old as the house. There are three Jamboes - very rare in South Africa. It is from the Eugenia family, originally from Aden, and supposed to be the tree of knowledge of good and evil of the Garden of Eden. Trees such as quince, jacaranda, banana, lemon, fig, syringe, wattle, oak and gum are well presented.
The plants play host to a wide variety of insects, including bees and Hottentots gods. Birds include witogies, sugar birds, flycatchers and occasional visitors like guinea fowl, hoopoes, hadeda and Cape eagle owl. Hundreds of lanner falcons can be seen on many summer evenings, circling above on thermals.
The shrubbery plays host to "streepmuisies" and the dry stone walls to non poisonous snakes with attractive markings. Geometric tortoises wander over the property and little black crabs live in the sloots . Multi patterned toads chase insects, and in spring, buck jump the garden fences to get at the shooting roses. Hares are frequent visitors.
Moolmanshof is thus an attractive home, in harmony with its environment, doing a splendid job publicising the Overberg to any visitor.
