Hi! SA friends!
I am just a French historian preparing a paper to be read, next July, at PMB campus. Congratulation! You have a very nice and interesting website. It really makes one feel like catching the first aircraft and fly over!
I was last at Saldanha in 2002, when I read a paper at the Military/Navy Academy. I spent there a wonderfull day. I sincerely hope that your country (which, in my heart is also mine) goes better and better again.
Very kind regards.

Letter from London
"I can't express in words how wonderful our stay at Papkuilsfontein was. The only problem was the brevity of our stay, oh how i wished we had booked a whole week..!"

"I had a great time. Did far more than I planned which was no bad thing after such a long journey - it would've been a shame just to sit by the pool for a week! There was possibly too much planned and I'd like to have had more time to do the same amount of stuff, but that was my schedule not yours. The whale trip was the best..."

Minwater Eco Adventures, Oudtshoorn, Klein Karoo

PERFORMANCE INDICATORS

"Minwater" (which means Little Water) is situated 24km southwest of the town of Oudtshoorn in the foothills of The Gamka Mountain, an isolated range in the malaria free Klein Karoo (Little Karoo), between the Swartberg and Outeniqua Mountains. Minwater is adjacent to the Gamka Mountain Nature Reserve.

Minwater can be reached via the R62 (Oudtshoorn - Calitzdorp Road) or the R328 (Oudtshoorn - Mossel Bay Road):

  • Via R62: 7 km from Oudtshoorn turn south onto a tar road towards Volmoed. 10,5 km further turn west onto a gravel road towards Paardebont. Almost 6 km further Minwater is on the right.
  • Via R328: North of Robinson Pass turn west onto a tar road towards Volmoed. 8,5 km further turn west onto a gravel road towards Paardebont. Almost 6 km further Minwater is on the right.
Minwater is situated in a mountainous region and from the high ground one is rewarded with breathtaking views of the Eastern Klein Karoo and surrounding mountain ranges. One of the most rewarding views is that of the Swartberg Range. It can be seen from way past Towerkop in the west to some distance past Toorwater in the east - a distance of almost 200 km.

Although farming activities continue on a section of Minwater, all livestock have been withdrawn from the veld a number of years ago. As a result the veld is in an excellent condition.

As mentioned previously, Minwater and Oudtshoorn are situated in the Klein Karoo and to be more precise, the Eastern Klein Karoo which spans the area between Calitzdorp in the west to Uniondale in the east and between the Swartberg Range in the north and the Outeniqua Range in the south. It is a transition area between the western rainfall area and the eastern summer rainfall area. Furthermore three biomes which are international hot spots of biodiversity viz. the succulent karoo, fynbos and subtropical thicket biomes converge in the Eastern Klein Karoo. Elements of the Nama Karoo (Great Karoo) vegetation occur here as well. The result is an astonishing diversity of plantlife in the area (almost 2500 species).

Minwater boasts about 550 of these plant species and your host will point out (on request) many species with interesting names such as toes, concertina bush, buttons, ostrich eye and lizard's tail.

If one is observant, many species of mammal or signs of their presence can be detected. The following species have been sighted here: klipspringer, common duiker, grysbok, steenbok, grey rhebok, eland, kudu, scrub hare, Smith's rock rabbit, rock dassie, baboon, striped polecat, small grey mongoose, yellow mongoose, honey badger, antbear ("aardvark"), black-backed jackal, bat-eared fox, aardwolf, caracal, African wild cat, small-spotted genet, porcupine, several species of mouse and last, but not least, leopard.

About 150 species of birds have been sighted at Minwater, inter alia the rare black eagle and black harrier. No bird watcher will leave disappointed. Furthermore, here are many leopard tortoises and other interesting reptiles, insects and other creepy crawlies - the Klein Karoo is an important area of biodiversity for reptiles and a large variety of invertebrates.

The accommodation facilities consist of two camping grounds:

Bush Camp

There are three camping sites with lots of shade. The sites are suitable for campers of all ages - from diapers to dentures. Although one does not need a 4x4 in order to enjoy the peace and tranquillity that this safe and secluded retreat offers, access to the Bush Camp is limited to vehicles with reasonable ground clearance due to the nature of the trail (800 m).

River Camp

This camping ground is next to the Moeras River and consists of three camping sites. It is accessible with all motor vehicles and caravans. The main lapa is partially roofed. An old mill house next to this lapa provides shelter during inclement weather. This terrain is also suitable for small conferences and functions.

Both the Bush Camp and River Camp are equipped with running water, hot showers and toilets. Firewood is provided.

The owner of Minwater, Louis Jordaan, possesses a wealth of knowledge of his veld in general and the plants that grow on Minwater in particular. The following remarks speak for themselves:

"To the uninitiated, the Succulent Karoo can appear a bit drab; a scrubby, barren landscape of unremarkable brown bushes. But once Louis has opened your eyes to the tiny miracles under your feet, it's suddenly transformed into a wonderland of fantastical life forms." and "I could have spent a whole week at Minwater with Louis as my guide to show me his secret world of wonderful plants."
(Dale R. Morris in South African Country Life of June 2008)

"And believe me, if you thought for a second that the succulent karoo was boring, then this is the tonic you need. This man brings the veld to life; in fact this is, without doubt, the best interpretive floral tour that I came across in all my travels for this book." and "Louis is an absolute fundi with a contagious passion for the Karoo."
Fiona McIntosh in Southbound Guide to South Africa's World Heritage Sites: Cape Floral Region Protected Areas

"...our host's enthusiasm and boundless knowledge of the little things that grow on the ground certainly will astound you." and "Allow him to share his passion... for Minwater's floral kingdom. Its a treat as well as a humbling experience."
(Ken Gerhardt in South African 4x4 Magazine van Julie 2003)
