Inclusive Merwenstein Package: (3 nights/2 days)
Guided tour on the farm (Fruitabout Farm Tour)
On arrival, your hosts will personally welcome you. After a refreshing glass of grape juice, you will be taken on a guided walk on the farm. (For those not so fit, the tour will be conducted in a VW-bus).
You will be introduced to the specific activities for the day and be informed about the trials and tribulations fruit farming. The tour will take you through orchards and vineyards to the Breede River, winding through the farm. A rich variety of plant- and birdlife awaits you around the Breede River.
This speciality tour will take you up close and personal to the delights of fruit and wine farming. While listening to the family's farm stories, walk through apricot, peach and plum orchards. In season (Dec - March), experience the harvesting of fruit, follow the wine making process and pick some fruit to enjoy en route. A wide variety of birds, indigenous flowers and plants on display. Relax under huge eucalyptus trees for a farm lunch and be on the lookout for the shy rover otter family.
Optional you may board the "Breede River Goose", for a relaxing cruise on the Breede River. Watch the birds, enjoy some fishing and swimming in the river. A neighboring farmer operates the river cruiser (houseboat).
Visit the local co-operative wine cellar, Merwespont and enjoy a wine tasting in an old cement wine vat.
Lys se Kombuis
The kitchen is well known for its "vetkoek", a speciality freshly baked - to be enjoyed with sweet of savoury fillings. Enjoy with tea/coffee. Other small meals also available.
Listen to the life stories in the farming community of "Merwespont", their beliefs, bygones and the tokkelosh! Visit the Tokkelossie Museum next door and experience a day in the life of a local farmworker.
Olala Tour (Day- or 1/2-day trip)
Half-day trip: A trip through Bonnievale, visit the information centre and a special church - the only one in the world built on request of a child. Visit the "squatter camp" and learn how the local people utilise the rubbish dump to build their houses, find materials for recycling and food for their animals. Visit the Housing Scheme of the Government - time permitting a visit to a local church or Kindergarten. Visit one of the Estate Wineries in Bonnievale.
Travel via the mountains to Montagu, well-known for its Hot Water Springs - visit a cactus farm - enjoy lunch at a wine farm, visit the Lace Museum in Robertson and back to Bonnievale via the well known estates Van Loveren and De Westhof.
The full day trip includes a visit to the Hot Water Springs at Montagu to relax and rejuvenate.
Stamp en Stoot Tour (Full day trip 9-10 hrs)
After breakfast we depart via the original gravel road from Bonnievale to Swellendam. En route you might find the African wild cat, bat eared foxes and secretary birds. Swellendam is the 3rd oldest town in SA with many historical buildings. Depart to Suurbraak, a mission village - walkabout tour with one of the locals as your guide. Visit the church and chair factory. From Suurbrak we travel along the gravel road towards the sea and visit the workers of the only hand driven ferry in SA. En route to the De Hoop Nature Reserve we pass through wheat farms, where you will find ostriches and Blue Cranes. Listen to De Hoop’s sad story of a Victorian couple. At De Hoop you will find magnificent sanddunes, good game viewing (bontebok, zebra and eland) and interesting plant life. Enjoy a picnic lunch overlooking the Indian Ocean.
Grootkloof Hiking Trip (Full day)
This is the farm of Hugo's father, Laubscher, nestled in the Riviersonderend Mountains. Visit an in-house local potter and the Dried Flower Production at Stormsvlei. Walk up to a cave, which was a Bushman burial site (no Rock art) and walk to a waterfall in the mountain. This is an easy hike, but not recommendable for guests having knee or hip problems. Enjoy a 4x4 trip up the mountain and view the diverse mountain vegetation. Lunch at a country restaurant in one of the oldest houses in the area. Travel back to Merwenstein via the gravel road through the Riviersonderend Mountains with stunning views of the Langeberg Mountain Range.
