Drive via Wuppertal, founded by the Rhenish Missionary Society. Their very first mission station located in the Cedarberg was established in 1829. It was given the name Wuppertal. With that it predates the naming of the German city of the same name by nearly 100 years. Follow the Cederberg 4x4 track to Farm Keurbosfontein to meet Arrie, the Reserve Manager of Bakkrans and our local guide.
1hr 4x4 drive to Bakkrans, private nature reserve. A visit to Bakkrans is very far removed from your everyday tourist fare. The 4 houses are traditionally thatched, stone-walled veld cottages, built with materials that were mostly obtained from the reserve. The cottages have been furnished to reflect the lifestyle of herders, who stayed in this area during a bygone Cape frontier era. In all, the accommodation here is unpretentious, but comfortable with "en suite" flush toilet, gas operated shower with crisp white linen.
A recent European visitor comments: "The real luxury at Bakkrans is to be intimately part of the silence, the remoteness and the unassuming lifestyle of years gone by, which is here in perfect harmony with nature. Indeed, a scarce commodity and often hard to find in today's world of increasing extravagance and haste."
