Conservation Management Documents
- Registered Nature Reserve.
- Member of and participant in Cape Nature Stewardship Program.

Program for land use
- Removed all livestock from veld to prevent overgrazing.
- Introduced only wildlife that historically inhabited Bakkrans region.
- Custodians of breeding herd of 27 endangered Cape Mountain Zebra.
- Member of the Mountain Zebra Translocation Committee.
- Restored some of the old buildings at Bakkrans into its traditional style. Kraal-structures that might be pre-colonial are left untouched.
- New buildings were all built in the traditional herder style. Drain systems are constructed according to Cape Nature eco guidelines.
Conservation of flora and fauna
- Installed ±34 kms underground water pipes to water points, to regulated veld grazing zones during dry periods.
- Fenced off small plots in veld to act as natural seed-banks.
- Introduced fixed camera points system to evaluate veld restoration over time.
- Closed all unnecessary (especially graded) roads and introduced handmade two-wheel tracks, following the natural contours of the veld. Allow only 4x4's and practise "compact driving".
- Removed all inner fences on the reserve. Do not maintain outer fences in a way that it prevents free movement by small animals to and from neighbouring properties.
- Use only invasive exotic wood (Australian species) for fire wood, community-harvested in regional ecological restoration projects. (Bakkrans has only natural indigenous vegetation).
- Only allow tourists according to strict guiding principles, which ensure a very light footprint.
- Walking trails follow the natural footpaths of resident animals and do not traverse "new" areas.
C2 Community: Optimal, fair host community procurement
Local community: labour,services, products
- All building, maintenance and infrastructure are done by local personnel, craftsmen and contractors.
- Contractors and craftsmen are from local Wupperthal missionary and are used exclusively for almost all improvements and ongoing maintenance.
Economic benefits
- Personnel have 2 to 4 bedroom, high quality thatched houses on Keurbosfontein farm, with fully equipped kitchens and bathrooms.
- Personnel share in income from tourist activities.
Local community involvement for projects
- All outside products, equipment and produce are sourced from or via local suppliers.
C3 Customer: Visitor enlightenment by sense of place experience
Quality hosting: Needs and expectations
- Our hosting is STRICTLY according to the uniqueness of the Bakkrans tradition and setting.
- This implies traditional local friendliness and endearment.
- Our service and offering is further based on the high standards we set for ourselves, as well as those of our travel agents and visitors.
- Our visitors seem to find the experience unsurpassed.
Interaction and participation
- Visitors are only in small groups, never more than eight, and are fully catered for.
- Activities like meals, walks, drives (day and night) are/can all be done on a group basis.
- Activities like bird watching, photography, reading, walking, plant & flower spotting, pool dipping, etc. can also be done by choice on an individual basis.
Enlightenment
- Visitors are supplied with literature and information (detailed, but not an overload) on the region's geology, history, earlier inhabitants, traditions, food, animals, plants, etc.. Also, information on present activities like research on animals, plants and reptiles are shared with visitors.
- Visitors are taken on Leopard walking trail and intensively informed about the geology, plants, research projects, etc.
- Visitors are taken on sight and game drives in comfortable vehicle.
- Visitors are introduced to the Leopard research project.
- Visitors are taken on night drives to look for Leopards and other predators. They also study night insects with UV lights.
- Adventurous guests can sleep out in the open on the cliffs of the Akkedisberg pass.
Safety of visitors
- All cottages have fire extinguishers.
- Reserve a member of the Cederberg Conservancy Fire Management Forum.
- Only area in the Cederberg with cell phone reception, which can be used in case of an emergency.
- Guides and visitors are made aware of the dangers of flash floods.
- The area is fairly isolated and far removed from criminal activities.
