Your programme on land use
- Removed all livestock to eliminate overgrazing.
- Removed all inner camp fences.
- Closed unnecessary graded roads and replaced with handmade two-wheel tracks.
- Do on-going road maintenance; the most important task in preventing soil erosion.
Conservation of flora and fauna
- Stopped all harvesting of firewood.
- Introduced limited numbers of indigenous wildlife.
- Installed additional water points to achieve more even grazing patterns.
- Installed water pipes for 27 kilometres underground and out of sight.
- Drains at Bakkrans cottages built strictly according to Nature Conservation guidelines.
- No hunting allowed.
- Numbers of visitors to reserve limited at any one time.

Energy use

Solid waste treatment
- All solid waste removed from reserve and disposed of according to Cederberg Conservancy guidelines.
Water conservation
- Use borehole water exclusively in tank and small trough systems.
- Use water only for game and cottages.
- Tanks have a special tap system to limit accidental leakages due to pipe breakages because of damage by animals, floodwaters etc., and thereby never loose more than 50% of tank capacity.
Effluents, emissions, noise pollution
- Activities in reserve do not result in high levels of effluents or emissions.
- Use only two vehicles on limited basis.
- Maintenance of reserve done mostly with hand labour.
- Effluents go into proper drain systems as designed by Nature Conservation.
Contingency plans
Cultural heritage conservation
- Old buildings authentically restored.
- New buildings built and furnished in old world period style.
- Only traditional food served to guests; using traditional methods, utensils, crockery, cutlery.
- Regional names of birds, plants, etc. are made available to visitors.
- A nine-page information document is available to visitors, expanding on the history of the reserve.
- Starting project to document Bushmen paintings in reserve and a possible site dig by archaeologists.
C2 Community: Optimal, fair host community procurement
Using Local labour, services and products
- All installations, building, improvements, maintenance and services are done by local personnel, craftsmen and contractors.
- All outside products, equipment, produce and products are sourced from or via local growers, suppliers or stockists.
Improving the standard of living
- Personnel get 2 to 4 times minimum salaries, plus 2 to 4 bedroom high quality thatched houses on the main farm, with fully equipped bathrooms and kitchens.
- The personnel get profit share in Bakkrans project.
Using people from the community for projects
- Contractors and craftsmen are from local Wupperthal missionary and are used exclusively for almost all improvements and ongoing maintenance in reserve.

Quality hosting: Needs and expectations
- Our hosting is STRICTLY according to the uniqueness of the Bakkrans tradition and setting.
- This implies traditional local friendliness and endearment.
- Our service and offering is further based on the high standards we set for ourselves, as well as those of our travel agents and visitors.
- Our visitors seem to find the experience unsurpassed.
Interaction and participation
- Visitors are only in small groups, never more than eight, and are fully catered for.
- Activities like meals, walks, drives (day and night) are/can all be done on a group basis.
- Activities like bird watching, photography, reading, walking, plant & flower spotting, pool dipping, etc. can also be done by choice on an individual basis.
Visitor enlightenment
- Visitors are supplied with literature and information (detailed, but not an overload) on the region’s geology, history, earlier inhabitants, traditions, food, animals, plants, etc.. Also, information on present activities like research on animals, plants and reptiles are shared with visitors.
- Visitors are taken on Leopard walking trail and intensively informed about the geology, plants, research projects, etc.
- Visitors are taken on sight and game drives in comfortable vehicle.
- Visitors are introduced to the Leopard research project.
- Visitors are taken on night drives to look for Leopards and other predators. They also study night insects with UV lights.
- Adventurous guests can sleep out in the open on the cliffs of the Akkedisberg pass
Visitor safety
- All cottages have fire extinguishers.
- Reserve a member of the Cederberg Conservancy Fire Management Forum.
- Only area in the Cederberg with cell phone reception, which can be used in case of an emergency.
- Guides and visitors are made aware of the dangers of flash floods.
- The area is fairly isolated and far removed from criminal activities.
