Bakkrans is a remote and little known wilderness area in the rugged eastern Red Cederberg. It has magnificent mountain ranges and a great variety of plant species, indigenous game, birds and other wildlife. Its earlier human history is captured in rock paintings that are thousands of years old. Artefacts that are thought to be ±100 000 years old have been found here.

A visit to Bakkrans is very far removed from your everyday tourist fare. The houses are traditionally thatched, stone-walled veld cottages, built with materials that were mostly obtained from the reserve. They have been furnished to reflect the lifestyle of herders, who stayed in the area during a bygone Cape frontier era. In all, the accommodation is unpretentious, but comfortable with crisp white linen.

Rates And Facilities
OPTION 1:
Accommodation (including bedding and towels): R365 per person per night (with a minimum of R1 460 for 2 nights).
OPTION 2:
Accommodation (own bedding and towels): R295 per person per night (with a minimum of R1 180 for 2 nights).
SPECIAL SUMMER OFFER:
If you book for 6 persons for 2 nights, you can bring 2 extra persons along at no additional cost. Please bring your own bedding and towels. This effectively works out at 8 persons at R221 pppn (25% savings on Option 2 above, and 39% savings on Option 1)
SPECIAL 4X4 OFFER:
Drive in your own car up to Keurbosfontein, and get free 4X4 transport to Bakkrans with Arrie.
Please Note: A 30% deposit is payable when reservations are made.
Facilities And Services Supplied
- 8 guests can be accommodated in 4 private cottages, each with 2 beds.
- Each cottage has its own separate shower and toilet facilities.
- Full bedding and towels supplied for Option 1 (above).
- All cookware, utensils, crockery, glasses, cutlery and braai grids supplied.
- A kitchen facility with a fridge/freezer is available to store and prepare food.
- 2 free packets of firewood for every night of your stay are supplied.
- A reserve manager will be in attendance, who will do general guiding duties for you such as game spotting, tracking, trail walking, etc., as well as some camping activities such as the making of fires and doing barbecues.
Reservations
A 30% deposit is required to secure a reservation, payable to Red Cederberg Tours - Nedbank Acc 1186097973, Branch code 118602.
In case of a cancellation
- 0 to 15 days before date of arrival, 100% of the deposit is forfeited.
- 16 to 30 days before date to arrival, 75% of the deposit is forfeited.
Terms and Conditions
- Visits are self-catered and guests bring and prepare their own food and drinks.
- Guests may travel in their own 4x4 vehicles. (Maximum 3 vehicles).
- This package is for a minimum of 2 nights.
- Cost: according to options above.

Owner, Johan van der Westhuizen, says Bakkrans is a spiritual place and he jealously guards it from over-exposure to the human footprint. Only indigenous wildlife, including 27 endangered Cape Mountain Zebras, inhabit this magnificent reserve.
Johan makes the reserve available to various organizations to conduct research on a variety of subjects, ranging from leopards and lizards to rock art.
Visitors to Bakkrans always leave afterwards with the distinct impression that they have experienced a very special place, where time stands still and where the simple things in life still matter most.
