Burchells Oxwagon Trail: 4X4, Biking & Hiking!
William John Burchell, famous botanist covered 7 200 km and collected 63 000 specimens and objects. You can view the map drawn by Burchell after his travels at Attakwas cottage, Oudtshoorn.

Burchell Accommodation
Bushcamp:
Rondekop camp at start of Burchell track with 2 hot showers and 2 flush toilets. You can camp next to a dam or in a little valley.
- 2km hiking trail
- Canoes & Swimming
- Natural setting
- Logs for long evening fires
- Camp can be booked exclusively for a group
Pioneer Camp:
You can experience camping as in the days of Jan van Riebeeck, i.e. no facilities but plenty of fresh air and silence!
- Max of 4 vehicles (10 people)
- Fynbos hygiene
- Located in forest next to a stream
- Nearby mountain pool for the summertime
- Explore the forest, stream and rock paintings
- Only a fireplace - wood to be gathered 1km before entering the forest
- Listen to the sounds of the forest

4X4 Trail
- Self drive with own or hired vehicle.
- Experience of at least 5 other routes.
- Four plant habitats - Renosterbos veld to Indigenous forest section.
- 10 km on the Botanist's exact tracks.
- At the halfway mark is a picnic place alongside a forest stream.
- Return route along a cattle track and Gal's pass.
- Allow ±5 hours to complete the route.
- Remember your permit and map.
- Bypasses for difficult sections.
- Recovery - Track owner at base camp.

Mountain Bike Trail
- This is a 20 km off road track.
- 10% would be stony, steep uphill and downhill.
- 10% steep up and down.
- 80% moderate in valley.
- Water at 5 km, 8 km, 10 km and 12 km from start.
- Mountain pool for swimming at 9 km.
- Circle route in the form of a figure 8.
- Map and permit available.

Hiking Trail
- When booked for hiking no 4x4 vehicles would be allowed on the track.
- It is an experience to walk in the footsteps of the botanist Burchell and to see the plants he collected, one of which was rediscovered in 2003.
- The 20 km day hike takes ±8 hours.
- Halfway you'll find a mountain pool and picnic spot.
- It is possible to overnight at the picnic spot. That give you the opportunity to reccy the forest section.
- NB fynbos hygiene.
- Map and permit on request.
